Conference Presentation
The world is going through difficult times, marked by increasingly severe manifestations of climate change, including heat waves in Europe, low water levels in the Rhine and Danube, and the growing frequency and magnitude of fires and other extreme events worldwide.
Against this backdrop, we are excited to announce the 5th edition of the AICC conference (Action versus Inaction facing Climate Change), to be held in Hamburg, Germany, on June 9–11, 2027, at the Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH).
Building on the success of our previous conferences in Paris (September 2023), Strasbourg (June 2024), Lausanne (June 2025), and Rome (May 2026), this edition adopts an expanded format to foster in-depth discussion of climate change, with particular emphasis on cross-fertilization between engineering and other disciplines.
Whether addressing adaptation or mitigation, engineering brings an essential dimension to operationalizing climate strategies. By bringing together researchers, decision-makers, and practitioners, the conference aims to deepen the dialogue across economics, engineering, urban planning, environmental science, history, geography, and political science.
This year, the Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH) will organize the event, with key support from the UNU Hub and the Digital City Science Chair (DCS) at the HafenCity University Hamburg (HCU).

Keynotes Speakers
Prof. Nima Shokri:
Prof. Nima Shokri is Chair and Professor of Geo-Hydroinformatics and Head of the Institute of Geo-Hydroinformatics at Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH), where he also serves as Executive Co-Director of the United Nations University Hub on Engineering to Face Climate Change. His research lies at the intersection of soil, water, climate, and environmental science, with the overarching goal of understanding and predicting how terrestrial systems respond to climatic and human pressures. He combines fundamental process understanding with advanced experiments, environmental sensing, satellite remote sensing, artificial intelligence, and big-data analytics to unravel complex interactions between soil, water, and the atmosphere across scales. By bridging porous-media science, environmental intelligence, and predictive modelling, his work seeks to transform observations and data into innovative solutions for challenges including soil degradation and salinization, water security, land–atmosphere interactions, and climate resilience.

Call for Papers & Submissions:
We welcome contributions from researchers at all career stages—from master’s and PhD students to senior scholars—as well as professionals from industry, public administration, and NGOs.
The Call for Papers will open in November 2026, with long abstracts for individual papers, posters, and full session proposals due in early 2027. All submissions will be evaluated by the AICC Scientific Committee. Keynotes and registration details will be announced shortly.
